IC 63 IC 59

By Lino Benz

IC 63 and IC 59 are located in the constellation of Cassiopeia at about 613 light years, the brightest sections are constituted by the two nebulae catalogued in the Index Catalogue. IC 63 at the top, shows an evident structure of gas filaments, with optical emissions dominated by the red colour, while IC 59 at the bottom appears as a cloud with a colour partly tending towards blue and without an organised structure. In particular, IC 63 consists of a region of ionised hydrogen and shows evident signs of photolysis. This phenomenon is very evident especially in IC 59, while in IC 63 the presence of strong ultraviolet radiation suggests the formation of a zone of neutral hydrogen through the dissociation of molecular hydrogen.
