NGC4725 and Friends

By Davide Nardulli

NGC 4725 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices. Unlike most spiral galaxies that have two or more arms, including our own Milky Way and the small NGC 4712 in the upper right, the galaxy that stars in this wide field has only one arm around it. Another uncommon galaxy is NGC 4747, the small distorted galaxy on the left is in 159th place in the Arp Atlas of Particular Galaxies, thanks to its long floating tails that indicate strong gravitational interactions in the past. NGC 4725 spans more than 100,000 light-years and is located 41 million light-years away from our Milky Way. Shot on 7, 8 and 14 April for about 12 hours with broadband filters.
