Nebulosa Medusa (IC 443)

By Francesco Ianniello

The Medusa Nebula present in this image, processed in the HOO version and photographed in narrow band, is one of the most famous and studied objects by astrophotographers. Through the use of an interdifferential filter (Optolong enhancer filter) it was possible to very well separate the third oxygen (O3) visible with a cyan color, from the hydrogen (h-alpha) with the typical red color. Also known as IC 443, it is a supernova remnant located in the constellation Gemini. It is believed to have originated from a supernova that exploded sometime between 3000 and 30,000 years ago, and that the core of the progenitor star responsible for this event formed the neutron star CXOU J061705.3+222127. It is a much studied object due to its interaction with other molecular clouds.
