Iris Nebula and Ghost in Cepheus

By Egidio Vergani

The Iris Nebula NGC 7023, is a reflection nebula located in the direction of the constellation of Cepheus. It is called a reflection nebula because it reflects the light of some nearby stars. Probably the main responsible for its marked brightness is the seventh magnitude star cataloged as HD 200775, which would be wrapped in the nebula itself. 1400 light years separate us from this wonder. The ghostly Ghost Nebula cataloged as Sh2-136 and vdB 141, is a reflection nebula combined with an emission nebula. It is a rather isolated cosmic cloud about 2 light years wide and located only 1200 light years away, always in the constellation of Cepheus.
