M83 is a barred spiral galaxy that was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille on February 23, 1752. It is the first galaxy discovered outside the local group and the third to be discovered among all galaxies: only the Andromeda Galaxy and Messier 32 were discovered earlier.
